BELKYRA™ (deoxycholic acid) injections are indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat, also called 'double chin', in adults. It is a formulation of synthetically derived deoxycholic acid in a sterile solution for subcutaneous injection. No human or animal-derived materials are used in the manufacture of synthetic deoxycholic acid. It is the only FDA-approved treatment for undesirable submental fullness.
Belkyra® is injected into the fat under your chin to contour your chin and reduce the fullness associated with submental fat (double chins). Suitable for neutral to severe double chins caused by fat accumulation because of aging, weight gain or genetic factor.
BELKYRA®(aka Kybella®) is a drug available in Italy since 2019 for the elimination of the double chin. In 2015 it had already received FDA approval for the US market.
It is a synthetic substance that simulates the behavior of deoxycholic acid, a substance that degrades fat in aspecificway.
The drug performs a cytolytic action, in the sense that it breaks the membrane of the adipose cell when it is injected. The result is therefore to "melt" the fat which is then reabsorbed and eliminated by the body. Until now, the only way to eliminate submental fat was surgery through liposuction, but today we also have this medical option, which is less invasive and cheaper.
BELKYRA® is injected into the area to be treated with a very thin needle, does not require anesthesia and is performed on an outpatient basis in about 15 minutes. The treatment is not painful, only a modest bearable burning will be appreciated.
The inflammation that follows adipocyte cytolysis also induces the formation of new collagen in the treated area, with a potential lifting effect on the skin of the neck.
Once treated, the affected area does not require bandaging or compression, the part will only be red and with a slight localized and temporary burning, but the patient can go home independently. In the following days there will be an edema of the treated area which will completely resolve in 3‐4days.
According to clinical studies, 3‐5 sessions at a distance of 30‐40 days are sufficient to gradually but permanently eliminate the fat of the chin.
